With nearly 50 years of success spanning across multiple genres, The Kentucky HeadHunters release of 'On Safari' has once again, paved the way for other bands to take notice of the legends they are THEN and NOW. The southern rock classic tips the hat to family and the southern way of life.
The new album, a Plowboy Records/Practice House Records joint venture, comes after several life changing events for The Kentucky HeadHunters. Band members Richard and Fred Young lost their father just three days before heading into the studio to record On Safari, causing the HeadHunters to let their guard down and pour even more emotion into the record, which they have dedicated to the memory of their father.
Coming off the heels of their first-ever European tour, The Kentucky HeadHunters are reinventing themselves yet again for their 12th studio album, drawing inspiration from their recent travels across the pond. The band credits Richard Young's son, John Fred, and his bandmates of Black Stone Cherry for pushing them out of their comfort zone to make the trek overseas, where many of the HeadHunters' rock influences call home.
"What makes you weak, makes you stronger," says rhythm guitar player and vocalist Richard Young of the band's experiences together in 2016.
That quote seems to be the theme for On Safari, and southern rock fans can be certain of a strong showing by the GRAMMY award-winning group. Touted by Billboard as a "great American rock 'n' roll band", The Kentucky HeadHunters continue to bring their rocking, energetic live show across the U.S. and Canada, showcasing the one of a kind sound that has given them the longevity in this industry that many acts only dream of.
The Kentucky Headhunters Give a History Lesson in ‘God Loves a Rolling Stone’ Video [Exclusive Premiere]
The Kentucky Headhunters transport viewers back in time with their new music video for “God Loves a Rolling Stone,” premiering exclusively on Taste of Country. The clip highlights major moments in U.S. history including Martin Luther King, Jr.’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech, soldiers heading off to war, Woodstock and the stock market crash of 1929, among other events.
“The video for ‘God Loves a Rolling Stone’ is a film for all of humanity,” Richard Young tells Taste of Country. “It depicts the struggles that many Americans have endured to keep our country’s spirit great and, in the end, shining. I wrote the song for those who are less fortunate, and the part that God plays in all our lives. In his eyes, we’re all the same. Enough said.”
The song blends the band’s love of many genres including rock, blues and country, featuring swampy electric guitar.
“People talk bad about a rolling stone, they say he’s got nowhere to go / But he’s got a home somewhere above the rainbow / ‘Cause God loves a rolling stone,” they sing at the track’s opening.
The Kentucky Headhunters approach and interpret music from their life experiences and strive to be a band that tells the truth, as evidenced in their latest music video.
“We are who we are and that’s what makes us what we have become,” Fred Young says on the band’s website. “From our life experiences and how we approach and interpret music is how we became a band that tells real life stories. We are a band of many styles: rock, blues, country, jazz, bluegrass, rockabilly, and other roots music. That is the foundation of our sound.”
