Kaiya

Debut Single

'Speak Out'

Music's Journey Podcast #86 w/ Powerhouse Pop Artist ''Kaiya'' Listen HERE

With a deeply soulful voice and wisdom far beyond her years, KAIYA is a pop singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist based in Calgary, Alberta. Her music has been described as a beacon of light, containing an undeniable message of empowerment, positivity, and hope.

On March 8, 2021 (International Women's Day), KAIYA was honored among the Top 3 in the Women's Freedom Song contest, for her debut single, "Speak Out." The track was released in December of 2020 and premiered on CBC radio. It has since been receiving radio play on several Alberta community and college radio stations.

KAIYA is an actively philanthropic artist, who regularly performs in support of charitable causes. At only 14 years old, she has already performed for thousands of people, at over 40 high-profile events. In the words of producer Justin Kudding, “Standing for something and reflecting it in your actions aren’t always aligned. In KAIYA, however, there’s a perfect synergy between belief and action. She is the perfect antidote to a world where young people are typically burdened with far too much for their age. In this atmosphere of unrealistic expectations, pressure to conform, and a lack of genuine connection, KAIYA’s music seems to ease the burden of youths as they transition into young adults. It doesn’t take an exceptional ability to perceive that KAIYA lives to bring hope and positivity to a demographic that sorely needs it.”

KAIYA’s performance highlights include opening for Brett Kissel at the 2018 and 2019 #OMGP (Oh My GardenParty) in support of adolescent mental health. KAIYA performed at Paul Brandt’s 2018 Prairie Rowdy Concert in support of the #NotInMyCity initiative, and with Brett Kissel at his 2018 and 2019 Christmas charity concerts in support of veterans, at the Jack Singer Concert Hall in Calgary. KAIYA was the headline event at Hayley Wickenheiser’s Wickfest 2019 in Calgary and Wickfest 2020 in BC. In 2019, KAYIA was honored with the Women of Inspiration Youth Excellence Award, for her work in music and philanthropy.

JUNO award-winning artist, Brett Kissel, upon hearing 'Speak Out' said "I am so excited for KAIYA to take on the world’s stage. When I first heard 'Speak Out' I thought I was listening to a 25-year-old artist who has already won 2 Grammys.”

And taking on the world stage she is.  Kaiya, along with JUNO award-winning Brett Kissel’s band and Sam Coulson of QUEEN’s “We Will Rock You” will be performing “Kaiya Live”, a virtual concert event happening in the summer of 2021(postponed-stay tuned).

2021 will also see new releases from Kaiya as she heads back into OCL studios with producers Justin Kudding and Spencer Cheyne.

Speak Out, an inspiring soulful pop ballad has a different meaning to everyone that listens, but the same astonishing impact. Written solely by Kaiya, Speak Out comes from the heart.

From inception to production, the single has been a long time in the works, but at just over 3 minutes 30 seconds, it won’t take long for a listener to resonate with the story Kaiya tells.

Spencer Cheyne (JUNO Award Winning Producer)

“I am quite inspired by Kaiya. She is an extremely hard-working person and usually, people who are that talented aren’t that hard-working and they usually just rely on their talent. What makes Kaiya so special is that she is that talented and she is also working hard which I think is a recipe for success and it is just a matter of time until things happen”

Brendan Waters  (CCMA Award winner)

“What excites me about Kaiya is that there are certain things that are really hard to teach, or that you can’t experience your way into being good at them. They are a little more innate. She has so much of that. It is fun to be a part of that and work with people like that.”

Hayley Wickenheiser (Multiple Olympic Gold Medalist and soon to be a doctor)

“Kaiya reminds me of a young Lady Gaga with her power and control.”

''Kaiya is undeniably a force to be reckoned with in the music industry today and for years to come,'' says Kim Cyr, Editor in Chief for NOW and THEN Magazine and host for the International Music's Journey Podcast.  ''There are no words that could possibly be worthy as a description of this young 14 yr old artist and what she is doing and can do.  This is only the be beginning for Kaiya.  She has such a great team of professionals working with her and she will need that with her future as a STAR in this business.  I wrote a personal email to The Ellen Show and The Kelly Clarkson Show because she is just that good.  '' The world got that much brighter in hope, inspiration, and empowerment with this Little Ball Of Dynamite.  Kaiya could walk out and be the most possed young artist ready for any world stage.  I am hoping for the angels to surround her and guide her on this musical journey.''

Music's Journey Podcast INTERVIEW w/ Canadian Pop Artist 'Dani Doucette' Talking About Her Evocative New Single & Video 'Craved' Check It Out!

Toronto-based pop artist Dani Doucette, released her new single Craved on May 7th via MDC Music and all streaming platforms. Craved is a catchy, upbeat song with a sci-fi vibe from the perspective of someone craving the desire of human touch.

“I wanted to really incorporate a sci-fi feel for this song, and initially my original idea was pretty far out there. I have always had a fascination with space and the “unknown,” says Doucette. “The lyrics in this song felt like they could be coming from someone that’s never felt a human body, that desire, that want, the craving.”

Host Kim Cyr and her Interview with Dani Doucette

What made you want to get into music?

''I have always been an artist'', says Doucette.  ''I started writing when I was six years old however, what was prevalent was the modeling career.  That is what drove me more and put me in the public eye as for the career part.  As far as my artistry, I have always loved music and I always was composing music.  It was all about timing and when I was ready to show people that other part of myself.  Modeling just played a role first because I was really good at it as a career in that moment of my life.  Artistry is a very intimate, personal side of yourself and that takes time to master. ''

''I was singing and songwriting at a very early age.  My father was a musician and so it was a natural progression for me.  It was nice sharing that passion and love of music with him.  Over the last ten years, I have really been concentrating on honing in on my craft as a songwriter and what I wanted to share with people.  It has been a really fun process and this year I have a lot of music that I am going to be releasing.  There are some new and some old.''

What's your favorite musical memory?

My dad played every kind of music but he loved his rock and roll.  Honestly, our place was always full of music and full of instruments.  He took me to my first concert when I was ten or eleven.  I saw Amanda Marshall.  For her to be my first real concert was empowering to see.  To see a woman perform like that I knew that is what I wanted to do.  She captivated the audience and told her story leaving her heart on that stage.  She was definitely my influence for sure.  I love singing soul and R & B like Alicia Keys because I love to play piano as well.  They really helped shape me into the artist I want to be.''

''There are many layers to Dani Doucette that make her a force in this music industry and her experience as a model in the fashion world allows her to express her own style and experiences in a complete package,'' says Kim Cyr, Editor in Chief for NOW and THEN Magazine and host of the International Music's Journey Podcast.

''During my interview with Dani Doucette, we talk about the competitive industry, inspiration, new music and process in her writing and the challenges she has faced in real life as an artist today,'' says Cyr.  ''She is a breath of fresh air and I just love her spirit.  You will too.  To hear the full interview, click the link below.

Music's Journey Podcast INTERVIEW #77 w/ Electric Pop Duo FEATURETTE Releasing A Powerful Music Video Shining The Light On Teenage Sexual Abuse!

Canadian Electro-Pop Duo Featurette Release Powerful Music Video for ‘The Blame’

Video Shines A Light On Teenage Sexual Abuse

Music's Journey Podcast INTERVIEW #77 w/ Electric Pop Duo FEATURETTE Releasing A Powerful Music Video Shining The Light On Teenage Sexual Abuse!

Toronto-based electro-pop duo FEATURETTE released the music video for their haunting and very personal song, ‘The Blame’. The video is a beautiful, raw and heartbreakingly stripped-down version of the duo’s original song, and chronicles lead vocalist Lexies' story of being a victim of sexual abuse in her teenage years at the hands of her music teacher.

“When I originally released The Blame on our 2020 record Dream Riot, I was only just starting to confront the idea of my abuser. I wasn’t ready to face the issue head on, and decided to bury it in my art, although it was starting to bubble to the surface organically,” says Lexi. “The first step is coming to terms with what happened and letting others know that what’s happened or is happening to them, isn’t their fault. The first step is finding their voice - my voice,” says Lexie Jay.

Directed, produced and art directed by Lexie, the video was shot in Toronto and is the beginning of her healing process and finding her voice, both through art and to speak about her past. She hopes that the video will help those that have been affected by abuse to find the courage to speak up for themselves.

FEATURETTE is an electro-pop duo from Toronto. They recently released their dark pop-sounding EP Dream Riot in 2020 and have over 700K combined career streams. Their music has been featured on the trending Netflix show Ginny & Georgia, Working Moms, Kim’s Convenience and many more.

''The Blame exposed version music video by Electro Pop Duo FEATURETTE is so compelling and haunting leaving it perfectly clear what this song is all about,'' says Kim Cyr, Editor in Chief for NOW and THEN Magazine and host of the International Music's Journey Podcast.

''The visuals are compelling, dark, and heartbreakingly beautiful at the same time.  It is a true testimonial of Lexie Jay's life being a victim of sexual abuse at the young age of 11 yrs old.  The art and visuals are set in a school with desks, lockers, giant pencils, paper airplanes, a cake with candles that tell the story of how old Lexie was when the abuse happened and the butterfly clip is undeniable.  There are some really powerful moments of Lexie wrapped in the music cassette tape and ripping herself free.  Then there is the glass that she shatters with the words ‘You won’t own up to what you did, so I’m taking all 'The Blame’.   It is powerful.''

''I can't say enough about how important this song and video are to victims all over the world.  To express the dark emotions that someone deals with inside after being sexually abused is very difficult.  Lexie and Jon captured that feeling of innocence taken.''

''Having a voice is the first step in the healing process.  It is so important to love yourself and know that it wasn't or isn't your fault. The healing is a journey of self-love and giving your story life on your own terms.  It is empowering.''

FEATURETTE duo Lexie Jay and drummer, Jon Fedorsen have delivered haunting, emotionally raw visuals in the music video that captures the lyrics exposing Lexie's story perfectly.''

''It is time for people to come together for a call-to-action to end the SILENCE and the dark shameful narrative that comes from sexual abuse,'' says Cyr.  ''Young children and youths and adults have suffered enough from a legacy of silence with no narrative because of the shame that they feel. It's time to give yourself a voice.  A voice without shame.  Let's start a new page, a new legacy.  A legacy that is full of hope, dreams, self-love, and understanding.  Let's help aid in the healing process as a community that cares.''

Music's Journey Podcast INTERVIEW w/ Canadian Pop Artist ''Jordan Hart'' Connects As An Amazing Lyrist With His Debut EP ''Only Pieces Of The Truth''

Jordan Hart

Releases New Single and the Music Video

Only Pieces of The Truth

Music's Journey Podcast INTERVIEW w/ Canadian Pop Artist ''Jordan Hart'' Connects As An Amazing Lyrist With His Debut EP ''Only Pieces Of The Truth''

Jordan Hart debuts his brand-new video for Only Pieces of the Truth, the single was released today via Believe Digital and all streaming services. Hart is a singer-songwriter from Alberta, now based in Toronto, ON. The single is an emotive, mid-paced, and gentle song with gloriously sweeping arrangements and the video features a beautiful dance performance expressing our desire to communicate but failing to do so. It was directed by Julia Hendrickson (Justin Nozuka), produced by Lucy Cameron, and choreographed by Lauren Runions.

Said Hart. ‘’The central character realizes that all he wants to do is be vulnerable and that he is “holding all the cards, wishing you could see inside his walls.” But even still, and especially because the stakes are so high, he can’t bring himself to take the first steps forward toward repairing the relationship (“staring at your door, I’ll never knock”).’’

Hart reached out to Julia Hendrickson after being impressed by her work on Justin Nozuka’s past videos. The video was filmed in an old, abandoned mansion in Toronto. The concept of the video was to explore the line between the purely natural and slightly distorted or manipulated. The dancers wore little to no makeup and were dressed very simply as to contrast beautifully against this forgotten space that was once such a grand statement of human presence.

‘’The mansion’s decaying paint and old wood make it feel like space is being reclaimed by the natural world,’’ said Hart. ‘’The natural light that quietly exposes the dark abandoned rooms reminds me of our profound impermanence in the face of the vastness of the environment that surrounds us.’’

In 2019, Hart embarked on a 100-day straight busking challenge in Toronto, through thunderstorms and snowstorms he played on. Every Sunday, 100 percent of the money he raised was donated to L’Arche Canada, an organization that helps create communities that support people with intellectual disabilities.  Since then, he has secured a record deal with Believe Digital and All Points (based out of the UK). The momentum from his daily busking also culminated in a sold-out show at the Great Hall in Toronto and his career streams also increased by over a quarter of a million. As a featured artist, his work with Lucky Rose on the song ‘’Lost’’ has accumulated over 15 million streams across all platforms and the track was top 30 at CHR Canadian radio. He is currently putting the finishing touches on his debut EP, out now.

''Pop artist ''Jordan Hart'' has built his career through his live performances and honing his brilliant artistry and vision as a singer/songwriter,'' says Kim Cyr, Editor in Chief for NOW and THEN Magazine and host of Music's Journey Podcast.  ''Hart describes his debut video for his single Only Pieces of the Truth as a connection to his heart and soul.  His vision moves you and connects you emotionally to that feeling we all can find hard to face and allow ourselves to be and that is vulnerable.  The dancing in the video drives home that message with softness and the love that is expressed between the two dancers.  You can feel the love that can be so strong but can be broken with the walls we build around ourselves that we feel are protecting us but in truth are robbing us of the compassion of what love can bring into our lives.  You can't feel love completely or understand it without allowing yourself to be vulnerable a hundred percent of the way.   I love this video and the visionary artist that Hart has become.  Hart shows his emotive vocals and lyrics to this brilliant song,'' says Cyr.

with New Single '50/50' Here Full Interview HERE

50/50 is a unique take on a love song. It's a love song about you (the listener), versus a breakup song about two people. This homage to self-esteem is timely as taking care of your own emotional needs became paramount in 2021, Kayla reflects on this on her latest track 50/50. As Kayla explains “Sometimes you need to show yourself some love, even if it means hurting someone else."

Working with Marty Martino (Honors, Down With Webster) and her A&R team, the result is one of Kayla’s strongest tracks to date and showcases her dynamic vocal range.

Reflecting on what she wants fans to take from the song Kayla says “Lots of people will hear this song and think it's just about a spoiled relationship, but to me, it's so much more than that. It's about recognizing that you deserve better than what you're being given. It's about removing unwanted toxicity from your life.”

Since the 2017 release of her debut single “Carnival Hearts” (which went on to stream over 5 million times) and its follow up Top 10 single, the anthemic “What You’re Made Of,” Kayla continues to impress with her talent and determination to spread positivity with her words and music.

''Kayla Diamond has a very unique way of presenting this love story,'' says Kim Cyr, Editor in Chief of NOW and THEN Magazine and host for Music's Journey Podcast.   ''50/50 (Slaight Music/Pheromone/Cadence): The new single from the Toronto pop singer/songwriter has burst out of the gate, notching the Top Indie Add on the DMDS/Yangaroo chart this week.  This song has a powerful message that can be taken in many different life situations.  It is what I love about it.  The message to self-love, to recognize when a relationship is toxic and that instead of staying in something that just isn't good for you.  Kayla opens up about her recent marriage Talia Hershon and the special love they have for one another.  I have a chance to ask some cool questions to them both,'' says Cyr.  To hear the full interview, click on the link below.

New Single

'Rain On My Parade'

INTERVIEW w/ Alt/Indie Pop Duo 'Command Sister' Release a Deeply Personal Song 'Rain On My Parade' You Can't Stop Listening To It!

7th MARCH, 2021 (TORONTO, ON) – The critically acclaimed duo Command Sisters shared their latest track, “Rain On My Parade” via 21 Entertainment/Universal Music Canada/Republic Records.

Made up of siblings Charlotte and Sarah, Command Sisters wrote the deeply personal song after experiencing a traumatic event in their own lives. Describing their thought process behind “Rain On My Parade,” they commented, “while we were writing it, we wanted to capture the moment a victim realizes that the person that hurts them no longer has control of them. It’s basically a middle finger moment.”

Despite the emotional subject matter, Command Sisters deliver the heavy-hitting lyrics in their undeniable signature style full of boldness, seduction and raw truth. Being honest and transparent has always been a key part of who they are and this single is no different. “This song and subject matter is something most people can connect with - whether it’s mental health causing havoc in your life, a toxic relationship, or the pandemic and financial struggles. Bad things happen to good people all the time.” They continued, “Writing “Rain On My Parade” was the release of all those feelings we had bottled up.”

“Rain On My Parade” is the first new musical offering from Command Sisters in 2021. Over the last year, Command Sisters have turned heads and caught listener's attention with their dramatic style and even hotter hooks. Their singles, “Steal Your Heart,” “Feel Good,” “Lonely Lullaby,” “I Like It,” and “I Can Do What I Want To” have gained them a loyal following among critics and fans alike.  Billboard praised “I Like It,” as “a catchy, guitar-driven track about a fiery, undeniable attraction.”

''The Command Sisters continue to break down the barriers delivering lyrics that impact the listening audience with transparency and raw truth from a victim's perspective when someone hurts you and you decide to take your power back,'' says Kim Cyr, Editor in Chief for NOW and THEN Magazine.  ''Charlotte and Sarah are setting their own path as trailblazers in the alt/indie-pop genre with their new single 'Rain On My Parade' that echos the message of inspiration and empowerment.  'Rain On My Parade' can lend itself to giving a voice to those who are in pain of a bad relationship, a loss, mental illness, and even the financial loss of jobs in this pandemic.  Charlotte is a genius with storytelling in her songwriting by never being afraid to bring it hard with lyrics that are distinct, powerful, bold, and honest.''  To hear the INTERVIEW, click HERE

Stay tuned for the official video for the single expected in the coming weeks and much more from Command Sisters.

ABOUT COMMAND SISTERS

Command Sisters—Charlotte and Sarah Command—wield the power to turn popular culture red, the color being a signature feature of a finely-crafted image. After playing together since childhood, the siblings honed on a distinct sound and style that has brought them to what you get today. Sarah drew on a lifelong love of shred gods, such as Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and Orianthi, as Charlotte nodded to the songcraft of Sia and The Weeknd, cultivating a sharp signature sound steeped in mind-blowing musicality and tight hooks. Their sense of style got just as loud with a crimson take on high fashion. This careful presentation turned heads. Not only did they perform across the United States and Canada, but they attracted partners such as Martin Guitars, PRS Guitars, Marshall Amps, MAC Cosmetics, and Boss/Roland, to name a few. Additionally, they cultivated a fervent social media following through consistently eye-popping posts. Mind you, they impressively did all of this without one official release. After inking a deal with 21 Entertainment, Universal Music Canada, and Republic Records, Command Sisters are primed for a bold breakthrough.

INTERVIEW w/ Pop Artist ''Katelyn Biehn'' Back with Second Single, 'Daydreamin' on Music's Journey Podcast

After two years away from the music scene, Canadian singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Katelyn Biehn is sitting mellow with her newly released single: the innately romantic “Daydreamin’” — available now!

Similar to the rest of the Stratford, Ontario-based singer’s discography, the two-minute, 55 second-spanning comeback single is a beautiful blend of the pop and R&B genres. The guitar and bass-driven instrumentals are complimented by Katelyn’s smooth delivery, perfect pitch and mellow demeanor.

“You know that moment when you see a total stranger and in your mind, you imagine walking up to them confidently and introducing yourself and then the ‘rest is history?’ ‘Daydreamin’ is that idea played out in someone’s mind,” Katelyn says, of her latest creation. “Who doesn’t love a romantic love at first sight story? A first love that lasts the rest of their lives.”

On how she came up with the arrangement, Katelyn said: “I started out with a fun beat just sitting around in my living room, I began making up a story with my friends and then ‘Daydreamin’’ was born.”

To help support the promotion of “Daydreamin’”, Katelyn enlisted producer Roy Hamilton to master the song and create a lyric video for its official release. It features shots of some of the world’s biggest and most popular cities, including London, Los Angeles, New York City and Seattle. There’s even an abundance of beautiful skyline and overhead shots of Toronto — which is just shy of two hours west of Katelyn’s very own hometown.

At the early age of four, Katelyn’s career began as a drummer, surprisingly enough. To this day, she still plays, however, banging those toms and snares led her to pick up a guitar and start writing her own music. She entered an abundance of talent shows and landed herself in the recording studio with a bunch of Nashville-based musicians by the time she was 17 years old. Those sessions inevitably led to her collaboration with Benji and the release of Spark — her highly-successful 2017 debut effort.

As well as Spark, Katelyn’s back-catalogue includes her 2019 debut EP, Ready; it features five original tracks, including fan favourites “Worth Fighting for” and “Supposed to Be.”

The doe-eyed Ontarian’s songs offer vulnerable and heartfelt snapshots with her satiny vocals over-energetic grooves infused by faith. Her inspirations range from John Mayer to H.E.R. to Justin Bieber —whose vocal coach: the Grammy-nominated Mama Jan, is working with Katelyn to draw out the full textures of her voice.

“Daydreamin’” is available now.

The 16th Annual Andy Kim Christmas Special, presented by AIR MILES will make its national television debut on Citytv and Citytv.com as well as streamed globally at LiveNation.com. The two-hour music special will broadcast from Toronto’s one and only, El Mocambo on December 19 at 8 p.m.

Going into its 16th year, the Andy Kim Christmas Special Presented by AIR MILES has been gathering friends and fans together to celebrate the spirit and generosity of the musical community with all proceeds going to charity. Instead of a live audience in a venue, this year’s show will bring people together from coast to coast on Citytv, Citytv.com, and LiveNation.com. The program is the brainchild of music legend, and one of the evening's performers, Andy Kim.

“I was on the verge of having to postpone the 16th year of my Christmas show and was truly bummed out. I kept thinking of all the people who are having a difficult time economically, spiritually, and emotionally. I did not want to abandon the purpose of my yearly show - giving to those in need at this time of year. With the support of Live Nation Canada, Rogers, and Air Miles, I am excited to bring the Andy Kim Christmas Special from coast to coast for the first time and hopefully raise an incredible amount of money to very worthy causes through the power of music,” said Andy Kim.

Hosted by Sportsnet host and Juno-nominated musician, Tara Slone as well as Cityline host Tracy Moore, this one-of-a-kind charity event will treat Canadians to a classic variety entertainment show that includes performances by some of the country's most sought-after singer/songwriters and performers. Viewers can look forward to seeing Andy Kim, Barenaked Ladies, Broken Social Scene, Buffy Sainte-Marie, City and Colour, Glass Tiger & Roch Voisine, Jully Black, Ron Sexsmith, Sam Roberts, Sarah McLachlan, Serena Ryder & William Prince throughout the special.

“Andy Kim’s Christmas is an expression of Love. From the beginning of his career, he spoke to what love and giving meaning in our lives. Now we need love and giving more than ever,” said Riley O’Connor, Chairman, Live Nation Canada.

During the duration of the program, viewers will be encouraged to visit Donate.AndyKimMusic.com to support three great causes: Crew Nation, CAMH Gifts of Light, and Food Banks Canada. AIR MILES is proud to present the program and encourages viewers to log onto airmiles.ca/AndyKim to use Miles towards rewards that directly benefit Food Banks Canada.

"Leveraging our Program to support those who need us most is part of who we are at AIR MILES, and we are thrilled to be presenting the Andy Kim Christmas Special in support of Crew Nation, Food Banks Canada, and CAMH,” said Blair Cameron, President, AIR MILES Reward Program. “While the holidays will undoubtedly look very different for many of us this year, we are proud to help create an experience that brings Canadians together through a rewarding holiday experience they can enjoy from the comfort of their homes.”

Live music inspires millions around the world, but the concerts we all enjoy wouldn’t be possible without the countless crew members working behind the scenes. Crew Nation is a charitable fund, created to support independent workers who are the backbone of the live music industry, who have been left without work. So far, the fund has raised $15 million, helping 15,000 live music crew members across 48 countries who were impacted by the rescheduled or canceled shows scheduled to take place through 2020.

CAMH Gifts of Light is a 100 percent donation-funded program that meets the unique needs of its patients. Items provided by Gifts of Light, like emergency kits and pajamas, make a difference year-round, but particularly during the holidays. By supporting Gifts of Light, you can help more than 14,000 patients each year find the hope, strength, and courage they need to get through their hardest days and find a better tomorrow.

Food banks across Canada have been severely impacted by COVID-19. The operational capacity is strained due to the loss of volunteers and changes due to public health requirements while in some areas, they're also facing increased public demand for support. The funds from Andy Kim’s Christmas Show will help Food Banks Canada with the immediate, emergency needs, and to prepare for what’s to come.

Command Sisters

"Lonely Lullaby"

New Digital Single

Command Sisters unveil their new single “Lonely Lullaby” today via 21 Entertainment/Republic Records/Universal Music Canada, the country's leading music company.

On the meaning behind the song, Command Sisters say, “‘Lonely Lullaby’ is about those chaotic and addictive relationships most of us have in our early 20s...you know you need to leave, but you stay. It’s toxic, yet you only find comfort from the one that causes you pain. They are your ‘reason and your remedy.’ They are your ‘Lonely Lullaby.’”

Lonely Lullaby

“Lonely Lullaby” arrives on the heels of their debut single, “I Can Do What I Want To” and its follow-up “I Like It,” which Billboard praised as “a catchy, guitar-driven track about a fiery, undeniable attraction.” All three tracks were recorded in Los Angeles with award-winning producer Tim Pagnotta (Walk The Moon, Weezer, Blink 182, Neon Trees). “Lonely Lullaby” also sets the stage for their debut EP, slated for the top of 2021.

Guitar at the ready, attitude on point, two women walk into the room in red, black, and white...

If they stepped out of a frame from a Quentin Tarantino flick, no one would question it. The sister duo—Charlotte and Sarah Command—turn life’s ups and downs into alternative music underpinned by live instrumentation and bold production. From music to fashion, the Toronto band makes a statement with everything they do.

“It started with red,” says Sarah. “I wanted a color that would symbolize the power of our last name,‘Command.’ Along with love and heartbreak, red resembles boldness. I needed that. For the majority of my life, I wasn’t a very confident person. Then, we embraced black-and-white, because we are a yin and yang, my sister and I. Our look reflects our synergy; the songs that Charlotte writes partnered with the instrumentation I bring. This is our identity.”

The sisters worked towards crystallizing that identity since childhood in small-town Alberta. As children, they started harmonizing together before eventually performing local shows. In middle school, they cut their teeth on the country music circuit, packing the Bluebird Café in Nashville, touring Asia, emerging victorious at the John Lennon Songwriting Contest, and performing for Yoko Ono during the celebration of John Lennon’s 75thbirthday.

In 2016, they settled in Toronto, and the move represented a turning point. Embedding themselves in the scene, they honed a combination of killer songcraft, social media savvy, and IDGAF style.

“Growing up in a small town, I feel like I wasn’t really being who I am as a person,” admits Sarah. “I was assessing myself due to the culture and the people around me. I dropped out of high school because I was bullied really badly. When we got to Toronto, we were surrounded by so many different types of identities and found support for who we are.”

“In Toronto, you feel like you can be yourself and be accepted,” Sarah continues. “We took all of these pictures in crazy red outfits and would show up to events like that. We decided to share what we were doing, and we found a community on Instagram that supported being loud and being ourselves. Tattoos and piercings were a symbol of us becoming who we are as sisters in a band and not being afraid,” she says, highlighting that many of her musical heroes are represented in her tattoos.

They immediately hit the studio and focused on crafting a scorching sonic style influenced by everyone from 1975 to Alanis Morissette, Hall & Oates to Lenny Kravitz. Sarah drew on a lifelong love of shred gods such as Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and Orianthi, as Charlotte nodded to the songcraft of Sia and The Weeknd, cultivating a sharp signature sound steeped in mind-blowing musicality and tight hooks.

As they attracted a growing following, they ignited stages on both sides of the border in addition to forming coveted relationships with Martin Guitars, PRS Guitars, Marshall Amps, MAC Cosmetics, and Boss/Roland, to name a few. Along the way, they inked a deal with 21 Entertainment / Universal Music Canada / Republic Records.

“I’m inspired by songwriting that tells a story and resonates on a deeper level,” Charlotte reveals. “I want to display emotion in brutally honest lyrics and disruptive production on a sonic level. A twist of our two loves: alternative and anthemic music.”

They introduce this style on their debut single “I Can Do What I Want To,” recorded in LA with Tim Pagnotta (Walk The Moon, Weezer, Blink 182, Neon Trees). The title says it all -embodying empowerment, standing up for yourself, and not asking for anyone’s permission -something the band knows all too well as they were first coming up in the music industry.

“It really pissed me off,” says Sarah in response to hearing over and over that another girl band would never cut through. “We’ve heard so many times, why should anyone care about another ‘female’ rock duo, but we decided that we weren’t going to listen to anyone else but what our gut told us. This song is about doing what you want and not apologizing for it.”

The song is accompanied by a D.I.Y. music video directed by the band and shot on an iPhone in their apartment during the quarantine. A visual so strong you’d think it was shot on a soundstage by a big name director...but once again the band has proven they can do it themselves, their way, regardless of life’s challenges. “Command Sisters is my sister Charlotte writing these songs while I create the image that embodies our music. We want our world to be something you can’t look away from even if you try to,” Sarah says.

“We’re two sisters who love making music,” Charlotte leaves off. “I want listeners to see that. We pour our hearts and souls into this. Hopefully, it makes you feel something.”

“On a deeper level, this feels like our life purpose,” Sarah concludes. “We try to make our music and career an example of perseverance, staying strong, and continuing to follow your passion.”
