After a short intermission, the air in Budweiser Gardens started to get electric as the lights dimmed and the crowd started to chant, 'Johnny, Johnny.'
The large curtain which surrounded the stage dropped and revealed Johnny Reid and his big band, the Soul Providers. Straight out of the gate,
Reid engaged the crowd opening with his hit 'Soul Train', an energetic, fast tune that bustles along, Reid worked the stage from side to side, making sure to draw all the fans into the show, not letting anyone feel left out. The Scottish born singer chatted with the crowd, telling stories between songs. One in
particular was his dedication to a ''wee woman'' of 92 who gave him a kiss during a meet and greet after she ''cupped his arse''. Reid is witty, funny and endearing. He is by far a seasoned entertainer that you won't soon forget. His love for his fans shows and the fans thoroughly enjoy every minute of the show.
The Soul Providers are a phenomenal 12-piece band. The ensemble is comprised of 3 backing vocalists, a 3-piece horn section, percussionist, violin/mandolin, keyboards, guitar, bass and drums. The Soul Providers did just that, provided music that gripped the soul of everyone in attendance.
During the performance, Reid sat down center stage with his guitar player, Yvan Petit, and fiddler Ben Rutz, and spoke of how they came to meet.
After a wonderful ballad, ''Dance with Me'' and a duet with Jessica Mitchell, who joined him for ''Whiskey Kisses''. When the song ended, the entire band joined Reid at center stage and dedicated a song to Mark Selby, who played guitar with Reid and the band for many years before passing away late last year after a battle with cancer.
A little side note, Selby was an accomplished musician and songwriter. He co-wrote songs with Kenny Wayne Sheppard, one being ''Blues on Black'' from Sheppard's breakout album in 1997.
At the midway point of the show, Canadian rock band 'Glass Tiger' appeared on stage and performed a melody of classic hits before joining Johnny Reid for ''Wae Yer Family''. This is from their latest album, 31, which Reid co-produced with the band.
Ending the night, The Soul Providers played a great rendition of ''Proud Mary'', then followed by ''Sweet Caroline'', and finished with Reid's hit
''Darlin". For the encore, the band performed a rousing rendition of the Dilbert McClinton tune, "Everyime I Roll the Dice". Reid took a moment to leave the stage and circle the floor of Budweiser Gardens giving hugs and handshakes to his fans. By the end of the show, everyone had a fantastic time thoroughly enjoying Johnny Reid and the Soul Providers!
