Coldplay frontman Chris Martin was on Instagram, hosting an intimate, impromptu home concert.
“I was supposed to be with the band Coldplay today, from which I come, but we’re stuck in different countries. So we can’t play together” he said into the camera. “So I’m here at your service for the next 20-something minutes. I’ve never done this before, so if I seem a bit nervous, I’m sorry."
For the next half-hour, one of the most recognizable figures in rock and pop music sat at the piano in his home studio, took requests from Instagram users, played various fan favorites from the Coldplay catalogue, covered classic tunes such as David Bowie’s “Life on Mars” and riffed on standards like “As Time Goes By.” The whole thing had a true off-the-cuff, let’s-get-through-this-together feel. At times, he couldn’t remember certain parts of songs and broke out laughing.
Chris Martin kicked off the series Monday, performing his own song “Yellow” as well as a cover of David Bowie’s “Life on Mars?” which stopped short of the chorus because Martin said it was too early in the day to hit a note that high.
“Maybe 9/11 was the last time I felt like we were all together,” Martin said of the pandemic, which reminds many people of the atmosphere after the 2001 terrorist attacks.
At the end of the broadcast, Martin announced that Legend would be the next artist to perform on “Together, at Home.”
“You can see a real piano player who doesn’t need fireworks to play,” he said.

John Legend took up that torch, tweeting on Monday, “My friend Chris Martin did a lovely little concert from home today. John Legend performed a live-streamed solo concert today as part of “Together, at Home,” a new series of online concerts presented by the World Health Organization (WHO) and Global Citizen. Together, the organizations have launched a campaign called the Solidarity Response Fund that aims to raise $675 million throughout the month of April towards COVID-19 relief.

Australian country superstar Urban also got in on the fun, delivering a garage-band-style show featuring wife and Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman, who busted a move on camera as his one and only live fan.
“Hi, everyone. We’re coming to you live from our warehouse, actually,” Urban said. “We thought we’ll just set the stream up tonight, mostly because I was supposed to be playing tonight, and I just thought it would be nice to be able to play anyway, even though we can’t be in front of all you guys tonight.”

Foster and McPhee also went live Monday in an impromptu concert on McPhee's Instagram, duetting on songs like Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" and Nat King Cole's "Smile" and "Unforgettable." The couple said they would try to keep the shows up every day at 5:30 PT, because "what else is there to do?"
"Just FYI, she's using my Grammys to prop up her phone," Foster quipped.
